Shopify Plus SEO for industrial distributors who outgrew the platform's defaults and need more than a Liquid theme tweak.

The CTO of a $19 million electrical components distributor on Shopify Plus calls a Tuesday morning meeting. The brief is short. Organic revenue is down 21% year over year. The marketplace channels are growing. The replatform was supposed to fix this. It hasn't.

HERO / OPENING

The CTO of a $19 million electrical components distributor on Shopify Plus calls a Tuesday morning meeting. The brief is short. Organic revenue is down 21% year over year. The marketplace channels are growing. The replatform was supposed to fix this. It hasn't.

You pull up Search Console. The pattern is what you expected. 41,000 indexed URLs. 28,000 of them are facet combinations Shopify quietly created when the merchandising team turned on tag-based filtering in the new Dawn-based theme. Half the long-tail product queries that used to land on category pages now land on ?filter.v.option.size=... URLs that have no copy, no schema, no canonical, and a load time of 4.8 seconds because they are running through three apps that each inject 80kb of JavaScript.

Your competitor on Adobe Commerce ships the same SKUs. They are not faster than you on the front end. They rank ahead of you for 1,420 commercial-intent terms anyway. The reason is that their team built the facet handling, the schema, the rendering pipeline and the internal linking around how Google and the AI engines actually crawl Shopify Plus B2B stores. Not around the theme's defaults.

That is what Lobit fixes.

This page is for you if

  • You run a B2B industrial, MRO, lab, safety, electrical, fluid power or fastener catalog on Shopify Plus, with 5,000 to 50,000 active SKUs
  • Your annual online revenue sits between $4M and $60M
  • Your buyers are procurement, plant maintenance, MRO managers, EHS leads or sourcing managers
  • You use one or more of: B2B on Shopify, Shopify Hydrogen, headless storefronts, Liquid themes, metafields, Functions, custom apps, ERP middleware
  • You have a real SEO budget ($3,500 to $15,000 per month) and you expect real outcomes
  • You are tired of "Shopify SEO agencies" that copy-paste the same DTC checklist for every client

If that's you, the rest of this page tells you exactly how Lobit engineers a Shopify Plus catalog so it ranks against Grainger, MSC, Fastenal and Amazon Business on the queries that matter.

The six Shopify Plus problems we fix (Mistakes Corrected, Palmolive style)

H2

Six structural problems Shopify Plus creates for large industrial catalogs. We fix all six.

Problem 1 - Faceted filtering generates thousands of indexable parameter URLs

What happens: Shopify's built-in filtering (?filter.v.option., ?filter.p.product_type=, ?filter.v.price.gte=*) produces near-infinite URL combinations. Without intervention Google indexes thousands of these as separate pages. Crawl budget gets burnt on garbage. Real category pages get reindexed weekly instead of daily.

How we fix it: systematic facet audit, canonical tagging strategy at the theme and headless-router level, noindex, follow directives on the right combinations, robots.txt parameter blocking where appropriate, internal-link suppression on filter chips you do not want crawled. We keep what helps you rank. We strip what is silently hurting you. Worked playbook is in our [faceted navigation cornerstone blog].

Problem 2 - JavaScript rendering on Hydrogen storefronts is hiding your product data

What happens: Hydrogen storefronts render product data, schema and reviews client-side. Googlebot's second-pass rendering catches most of it. GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended do not. AI engines see an empty shell when they decide whether to cite you.

How we fix it: server-side rendering audit, SSR or SSG of all critical content, schema injection at the HTML level (not via React hydration), prerender testing across all six major bots, edge rendering for B2B-only routes. The first AI Overview citation for your category shifts to you within 60 to 90 days.

Problem 3 - The B2B on Shopify customer-specific pricing model is leaking signals

What happens: B2B on Shopify hides contract pricing behind login. The crawled price defaults to MSRP. AI engines see your "list" price and cite Amazon Business or Grainger as cheaper, even when your contract price is 18% lower for a logged-in buyer.

How we fix it: structured-data strategy that exposes the public anchor price, the "from" price band, and the "request a quote" call-to-action in machine-readable form. Schema patterns that AI engines can cite without exposing protected contract pricing. Where helpful, a BusinessAudience schema block and PriceSpecification ranges that signal "B2B contract pricing applies, real number on quote."

Problem 4 - Metafields and Functions are storing the technical attributes search engines reward, in a place crawlers cannot see

What happens: your team migrated material grade, thread pitch, voltage range, ANSI / OSHA / ASTM rating, MOQ, lead time, packaging unit and 40 other attributes into metafields. Internally, that is excellent. Externally, those attributes never reach the HTML. They never become additionalProperty schema. Google has no idea your page is the authoritative answer to "316 stainless socket head cap screw M8 x 30 mm ANSI B18.3".

How we fix it: metafield-to-schema mapping. Every commercial attribute on every PDP gets surfaced into additionalProperty schema and into the visible page copy. Faceted nav gets wired to the same attributes. Internal search gets wired to the same attributes. The PDP becomes the most complete answer for any procurement query against that SKU.

Problem 5 - App stacking is destroying your Core Web Vitals on category pages

What happens: ten apps each add 60 to 120 kb of JavaScript. LCP on category pages goes from 1.9 seconds to 4.6 seconds. INP fails on filter clicks. CLS jumps when sticky-filter banners load. Google quietly demotes the entire site in mobile rankings.

How we fix it: app audit and removal recommendations, theme code review, deferred-load strategy for non-critical apps, Liquid refactor for the parts that matter, image strategy on category and PDP grids. LCP target is 2.0 seconds or better on mid-tier 4G. INP target is 200 ms or better. We monitor monthly.

Problem 6 - You are invisible inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Bing Chat

What happens: procurement buyers ask AI engines for supplier recommendations. The AI engines look for citation-friendly product pages, brand landing pages, structured Organization schema, an llms.txt file and entity-completeness signals. Most Shopify Plus B2B stores have none of these. You don't appear in the answer. You don't see the lost demand in GA4.

How we fix it: GEO engineering for the Shopify Plus stack. llms.txt deployment, Organization schema with sameAs, Wikipedia and Wikidata entity completion where eligible, passage-level optimization on PDPs and category pages, citation tracking inside Profound, Otterly and AthenaHQ. Full programme on the [GEO service page] and the [GEO cornerstone blog].

Why Shopify Plus is not the problem (Pre-emptive Claim)

There is a louder voice on LinkedIn that says industrial distributors should never have moved to Shopify Plus. That voice is wrong for most distributors.

Shopify Plus, configured correctly, ranks. Lobit clients on Shopify Plus, with the same engineering depth applied as our Adobe Commerce or BigCommerce clients, outrank the same competitors on the same queries. The platform is not the constraint. The configuration is the constraint.

What Shopify Plus does require is a level of customization that 90% of generalist Shopify agencies are not equipped to deliver:

  • Liquid theme refactoring at the section and snippet level
  • Metafield architecture across products, variants, collections and shop
  • Functions for B2B-specific cart and discount logic
  • Hydrogen or custom headless build with rendering controlled at the edge
  • App rationalization and custom-app development for what really needs to be custom
  • ERP and PIM integration (typically with NetSuite, SAP, Epicor, Acumatica, or Infor) so the product data flowing into Shopify is clean enough to schema

That is the work. That is what Lobit does. That is why Lobit clients on Shopify Plus rank.
